THIS COMMUNICATION IS SENT ON BEHALF OF THE INTERIM VICE PRESIDENT FOR PUBLIC SAFETY AND CHIEF OF POLICE, HUGH CLEMENTS
At approximately 5:45 p.m. today (Wednesday, March 18), a Brown University community member observed three masked individuals in the courtyard of Keeney Quad. Recognizing that the suspects matched the description provided in a March 14 Timely Warning, the community member alerted Brown’s Department of Public Safety and Emergency Management (DPSEM) after observing one individual tailgating into Jameson-Mead residence hall behind a resident.
DPSEM officers arrived within moments. Two juveniles were apprehended inside the building, and a third was taken into custody following a brief foot pursuit with assistance from the Providence Police. A fourth person eluded capture and was last seen near Kennedy Plaza.
DPSEM is actively investigating this incident, and the individuals will be charged accordingly. There are no reports of community members being physically harmed during this encounter, and at this point, we have received no additional reports today of stolen items.
We remain in close coordination with the Providence Police Department to monitor the area, and our officers continue to conduct regular patrols on and around campus. As always, we work collaboratively with our local partners to ensure the safety of our neighborhood.
The actions of the Brown community member to contact DPSEM were instrumental in enabling a quick response and offer an excellent reminder of the right steps to take upon encountering suspicious activity. Please continue to contact DPSEM should you see something that raises concerns.
